The eyebrows droop as we grow older, falling below the level of the bony ridge above the eye and contributing to the sagging of the upper eyelids. In addition, the frown lines between the eyebrows get deeper with age, as do the horizontal wrinkles in the forehead.
Although the forehead and eyebrow lift can be done alone, we usually do it along with a facelift. The forehead is lifted by making an incision over the top of the head. The muscles that cause the frown lines and forehead wrinkles are partly removed, and the forehead is pulled upwards (like a facelift) to lift the eyebrows.
Although patients are almost always concerned about having a "surprised" look, this simply has not been a problem we have seen in our practice. Most people find the higher eyebrows, smoother forehead and reduced frown lines after a forehead and eyebrow lift contribute greatly to a more youthful, alert appearance.
